Middle School (Years 7 to 9)
At Mirboo North Secondary College, the Middle School program (Years 7–9) is thoughtfully designed to support students as they transition into Secondary Education, fostering a nurturing and engaging environment that lays a strong foundation for their academic and personal growth.
A Supportive Start: Orientation and Transition
Recognizing the challenges that come with moving from Primary to Secondary school, Mirboo North Secondary College offers a well-sequenced, action-packed, orientation program of up to four days in Term 4. This initiative builds student confidence and ensures a smooth transition into the college environment. Year 10 Peer Support students, trained by our Voice of Student Leaders & teachers, play a pivotal role in mentoring newcomers, helping them feel welcomed and connected from the outset.
The Avenue: A Nurturing Environment
The Avenue serves as a dedicated space within the college that emphasizes the core values of trust, respect, and pride. It is here that students are encouraged to develop positive relationships with peers and staff, fostering a sense of belonging and community. The Avenue’s supportive atmosphere is integral to helping students navigate the early years of secondary schooling with confidence and resilience.
Holistic Learning and Wellbeing
Mirboo North Secondary College’s Middle School curriculum offers a blend of core and elective subjects, promoting creativity, engagement, and a passion for learning. (please click on the Middle School Handbook link below to see our current range of subjects).
Talented and caring staff work collaboratively with students and parents to build and maintain positive working relationships with student learning at the core of everything we do. The college places a strong emphasis on health and wellbeing, actively encouraging participation in co-curricular activities such as sport, music, outdoor education, library programs, and camps, to complement their studies. These experiences not only enhance learning but also instil a sense of civic responsibility and leadership.
Our dedicated wellbeing team includes: The Wellbeing Coordinator, Mental Health Practitioner, a School Nurse, our Koorie Education Support Officer (KESO), the School Chaplain & Assistant Principals. (more information about Wellbeing support can be found here). Wellbeing Support
Community Engagement and Student Voice
Students are provided with opportunities to engage with the wider community, including partnerships with local organizations and participation in programs like the Voice of Students (VOS) group. Each year students can nominate to be part of the VOS team as representatives of their year level. They get to experience extra-curricular camps and excursions, organising committees for major school events & fundraising activities, and regular meetings with leadership to discuss issues of concern and/or improvement around the school.
