Music

Students at MNSC can pursue music through our classroom pathways, instrumental music program, the Kool Skools recording project and student-led clubs.

MNSC is a part of the South Gippsland Schools Music Program. This program facilitates instrumental lessons and ensemble experiences across five local secondary schools: Foster, Leongatha, Korumburra, Wonthaggi and Mirboo North. Instrumental lessons are provided each week on a wide range of instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, guitars) and every student participates in an ensemble for one hour a week. A highlight of the SGSMP is the Combined Band events which are held several times a year and culminate in the SGSMP Gala Event in early December.

Students at Mirboo North Secondary College have the opportunity to participate annually in the Kool Skool Recording project. This project encourages original songwriting and provides an amazing opportunity for students to gain invaluable industry experience recording in the professional space of Studio 52.

Our classroom music curriculum has a focus on contemporary music, fostering creativity and performance through a range of assessment tasks. Students learn basic chords on guitar and keyboards as well as exploring technological platforms. All activities are designed to foster a broader understanding of the benefits of music.

Band opportunities at Mirboo North Secondary College include:

  • Junior Band: Students who are learning an instrument for the first time form Junior Band
  • Concert Band: This ensemble is made up of students who have been learning for between 2 – 4 years.
  • Guitar Ensemble: new to the College in 2019, our guitar ensemble plans to give invaluable experience to our acoustic guitar students.
